Jail guard charged with raping inmate

ALBANY COUNTY — A corrections officer from Albany County’s jail has been charged with raping a female inmate at the jail, police say.

The woman said on Saturday that Michael A. Snyder Sr., 59, of Rensselaerville, had sexually assaulted her three times over the last two weeks, according to a release from the Albany County Sheriff’s Office.

Snyder has worked as a corrections officer for 19 years.

Evidence was taken by sheriff’s investigators that was then turned over to the New York State Police for analysis, the release says.

Snyder was arrested on Tuesday and charged with three counts each of third-degree rape and third-degree criminal sex acts, both felonies; three counts of official misconduct, and one count of sexual abuse, both misdemeanors. He is awaiting an arraignment at Colonie Town Court.
