Protesters to picnic at Thacher
NEW SCOTLAND While it is likely that funding for operations of parks and historic sites will be restored to the state’s budget, about 500 people are expected to demonstrate their affection for parkland in a weekend-long picnic at Thacher Park.
The governor’s proposed budget had called for shutting over 50 parks and historic sites statewide, including Thacher, in an effort to balance the budget.
The event is sponsored by the Facebook group called 2000 to Save Thatcher Park, which will being accepting donations intended to benefit the parks, said Chris Bonham, who is helping to organize the event.
He expects several speakers to address the crowd and five bands have volunteered to play. Hannaford supermarkets have donated picnic food, but guests are encouraged to bring something to eat.
Each day this weekend, the picnic will run from noon to 5:30 p.m.
