GUILDERLAND — Cancer led Thomas Quaglieri, and his son, Daniel, to start a program called 4-Wheeling for Healing, in 2006.

This year, Quaglieri is partnering with Choices 301, Ed Frank’s program run out of the Beacon of Hope building on Gun Club Road, in Altamont, that raises awareness about the importance of safe driving.

Quaglieri described his not-for-profit organization as “a motorized Make-A-Wish.” His teenage son battled lymphoma, and the only thing that kept him optimistic were the ATV rides he got to take between treatments, said Quaglieri.

Four years later, Quaglieri and his son, who is now fully recovered, have given sick children between 50 and 100 rides, on a 2,000 acre property in Nassau. Quaglieri is hoping to expand his fleet of motorized recreational vehicles by getting some side-by-sides, which seat four people, so the kids can bring parents and friends along on their rides.

In an effort to raise money for the organization, Quaglieri is holding insurance-point reduction classes on Gun Club Road. The classes are meant for people who need to reduce points on their licenses, or who own multiple insured vehicles, and would like to receive discounted insurance rates.

The Beacon of Hope building is an appropriate place for the classes, because of Frank’s displays for the Choices 301 program; there are pictures, and other paraphernalia, detailing the aftermath of drunk driving.

“The classes touch a little bit on the effects of alcohol and drunk-driving, and being able to see that stuff firsthand really drives the point home,” Quaglieri said. He said he also pushes safety on the trails for motorized vehicles.

The class registration is $30, and the money will go toward 4 Wheeling for Healing.
