VCSD board race open: Hubert steps down

VOORHEESVILLE — Nominating petitions are available for Voorheesville district residents interested in running for the school board.

Board member Gary Hubert’s four-year term expires this June. Former board member Kristine Gravino unexpectedly resigned from her four-year term last year; Saia filled the position in November. Her seat is open for a three-year term.

“The person with the most votes gets the four-year position,” said board president Timothy Blow of candidates. “The person with the next highest amount gets the three-year position.”

Hubert told The Enterprise that he will not seek another term.

“Having been retired two years, I want to enjoy my time off. Having served nine years, it’s about time to let other people take over.”

Asked what he had accomplished while on the board, Hubert said, “I tried to do what was best for the students of the district.”

Saia said that she had committed to running for the school board when she filled Gravino’s spot last year.

“I have learned a lot. There’s a lot to be done,” she said. “I do plan to run. I have two sons in the district.

“I think it does help to have a lawyer on the board, because it brings a different skill set to the board,” Saia said.

Petitions may be obtained in the district office, and the deadline for filing petitions is Monday, April 20.
