Motorcyclist struck by minivan

GUILDERLAND — A motorcyclist was injured yesterday when a driver misinterpreted his hand signal, according to Sergeant Eric Batchelder with the Guilderland Police.

Batchelder said events unfolded this way:

At 12:15 p.m. on Wednesday, Michael Howe, 23, of Niskayuna was riding his motorcycle east on Route 146 towards Route 20. A mini van driven by Lisa Jochnowitz, 51, of 2319 Western Ave. in Guilderland, was traveling in the same direction behind him.

Near the entrance to the Northeastern Industrial Park, at Van Buren Boulevard, Howe stopped to make a right turn. Jochnowitz interpreted his hand signal as motioning her to go around him; she drove ahead and hit him, said Batchelder.

Howe, who was conscious, suffered leg injuries, and was transported to Albany Medical Center Hospital by the Altamont Rescue Squad, said Batchelder; Jochnowitz was ticketed for passing on the right.
