Monday rsquo s snow and slick roads leave one dead another shaken

NEW SCOTLAND — One of winter’s last storms left a woman dead on Monday.

Margaret C. Lozano, 69, of 41 Harvard Rd., Watervliet, was driving south on Route 155, near Voorheesville Avenue, at about 2:30 in the afternoon when she slid into the northbound lane and hit a delivery truck, according to the Albany County Sheriff’s Department; she was pronounced dead at the scene by Albany County Coroner Herman Thomas.

After a brief thaw, the east coast was blanketed with snow on Monday and roads in the Capital Region were slick.

“I actually think she was on her way to help a grieving friend,” said Jim Lozano, the oldest son of Lozano who worked for over 30 years as a registered nurse.

She was the only one in her 2005 Nissan Sentra and the driver of the Carioto Produce Company truck — 26-year-old Brian C. Keefe Jr. of 94 Rensselaer Ave. in Cohoes — was the only one in the truck.

“He’s fine, just a little shaken up,” said Greg Carioto, who had gone to visit Keefe at the hospital.  The Voorheesville Area Ambulance Service took him to the Albany Medical Center Hospital with non-life-threatening injuries, according to the sheriff’s release.  Currently, Keefe is home and will return to work when he feels ready, Carioto said.

An inspection of the delivery truck, a 2007 Isuzu, conducted by the New York State Department of Transportation, found no deficiencies or equipment violations.

No tickets have been issued.

Margaret Lozano’s obituary appears in this week’s paper.
