The Voorheesville girls’ basketball team watched its season slip away in the final seconds, of Friday night’s Class CC quarterfinal game.

Schenectady Christian’s Monica Compton hit two free throws with 10 seconds left to ice the team’s 45-to-42 victory over the Lady Birds at Maple Hill.

Friday’s loss was similar to Voorheesville’s loss to Hoosic Valley in the Class CC finals last year. The Lady Birds saw that game skid away in the final moments as well.

Head Coach Bob Baron said that his team started out poorly, but Voorheesville came back and got a lead with roughly two minutes to go. “We didn’t put the ball in the basket at key points,” said Baron. “We had some time off before the game and I think that hurt us.”

The Lady Birds (9-10) had a higher seed than the Falcons (14-5) because Voorheesville plays tougher competition during the regular season in the Colonial Council than Schenectady Christian does in the Western Athletic Conference. That was Baron’s theory anyway.

Seniors Britney Creed, Elizabeth Madden, Amelia Martin, and Emily Norris will no longer wear the purple and gold. The four combined for 27 points on Friday.

Despite the record, it was a productive year for the team. All nine players could score on any given night. “We did have a good balance of scoring,” Baron said. “But we definitely had the potential to win more games.”

Baron is happy that he had a good group of girls who were easy to coach. Everyone got along.

“Teamwork and friendships go further than wins and losses,” said Baron.
