Guilderland wrestling at qualifer

GUILDERLAND — The Guilderland wrestling team had some success at the Section II state qualifier meet at the Glens Falls Civic Center last weekend.

Senior John D’Ambrosio had the most success. He brought home a Section II large-school title in the 189-pound weight class and will represent the section at the state tournament on Long Island this weekend.
"He’s a goer," said Guilderland Coach Regan Johnson, "He really competes hard. I’m really happy for him and for his family. He made a big commitment and he reached the end of the rainbow. He’s been wrestling for years and winning last week was his goal."

D’Ambrosio, who was seeded second, beat Tim Elbert of Queensbury by a 4-3 decision in the final to win the sectional crown and state-meet spot. D’Ambrosio won the Class A title at 189 pounds the week before.
"John beat a kid from Burnt Hills in the first round," Johnson said. "He pinned him. He then beat a kid from LaSalle that he hadn’t wrestled before. He won by a 12-7 decision. He dominated the match. He then won 4-3 in the finals.
"He beat up everyone in the Class A’s," Johnson added. "He did pretty good. He was the second seed and the top seed lost in the semifinals. Johnny wrestled great and now he is looking toward this weekend."

Kyle Hussey, who was the story of the Class A meet, finished third at the Section II meet. He was pinned in the semifinals but came back to win his consolation match.
"He made a mistake in the semifinals," Johnson said. "He got caught on his back and when you are dealing with someone who is 270 pounds, you can’t afford to do that. But he did very well for someone who has wrestled for only two weeks." Hussey had been injured and unable to compete for most of the season.

Matt Cubillos finished second in the 103-pound weight class. He was pinned by Jeremy Cuomo of Schalont.

Ian DeSol finished third in the 140-pound weight class after defeating Kyle Denis of Saragota in the consolation match.

Josh Sawyer and Dan Doynow both ended the tournament with fifth-place finishes.
"John is our only senior," Johnson said. "We are getting five of our six place finishers back. It’s good. We’ll try to get a couple more guys in there. If we do that we’ll be right in it next year."
