Guilderland sectionals winter 2006



GUILDERLAND — This past weekend was a busy one for many Guilderland High School athletes — especially those in individual sports.

Many Guilderland athletes competed in sectional meets and a few will continue their season for another week or two.

Seven Guilderland athletes advanced to state competition in sports this winter after competing in sectional tournaments.

Wrestler John D’Ambrosio, a senior, advanced to the state meet in his sport after winning in the 189-pound weight class at the Section II meet in Glens Falls. (See related story).

D’Ambrosio will compete on Long Island at the state meet this weekend.

Gymnasts Dana Goodnight and Erika Pesta advanced to the state meet that will be held at Shaker High School on March 3 and 4. (See related story). Goodnight finished second in the all-around. She won the uneven bars and finished second on the beam and fourth in the floor exercise.

Pesta advanced to the state meet after finishing sixth in the beam.

Guilderville swimmer Vadim Yafayev won the 200-yard individual medley in a time of 2:00.72. His time qualified him for the state meet that will be held at Erie Community College on March 3 and 4.

Yafayev also qualified for the state meet in the 500-yard freestyle after a fifth-place finish in the race held at Lynch Middle School in Amsterdam. Yafayev swam 4:59.77.

Yafayev, a Guilderland High School student, swims on the combined Guilderland and Voorheesville team.

Guilderland will also have two track-and-field athletes who will compete in the state meet at Cornell University next weekend.

Junior Brian Rhodes-Devey qualified for the state meet in the 3,200-meter run. Rhodes-Devey finished third in the race with a time of 9:25.09.

Amber Bowman qualified in the triple jump with a leap of 34-8 3/4.
