$500 reward offered to find who left dead beagle in garbage bag

Last Thursday, a dead dog was found in a black plastic garbage bag alongside Clapper Road in Selkirk, police say.

This week, the New York State Humane Association, headquartered in Kingston, is offering a $500 reward for information leading to the arrest and conviction of the person who left the dog, according to a release from the Bethlehem Police Department.

The dog was an older black-and-white male beagle who had been denied proper care and veterinary treatment for some time, according to an initial report. It is not clear if the dog was dead before being placed in the garbage bag. The dog’s body is being sent to Cornell for a necropsy, the release said.

Anyone with information about the case is asked to call Detective Ken Beck at the Bethlehem Police Department at (518) 439-9973. All calls will be kept confidential.

The New York State Humane Association, the release says, has conducted animal cruelty investigation workshops for police and humane investigators throughout the state for the past 18 years and has offered rewards in the past to assist in police investigations.
