Price Chopper issues a recall of peanut butter products to avoid poison

GUILDERLAND — When Peanut Corporation of America expanded its initial recall of peanut butter, Price Chopper Supermarkets voluntarily recalled some food.

On Jan. 13, the peanut business, based in Lynchburg, Va., announced a recall of peanut butter that had been produced in its Blakely, Ga. facility citing salmonella contamination.

“PCA initiated this recall after an open container of King Nut brand peanut butter in a long-term care facility in Minnesota was found to contain a strain of salmonella,” says a release from the peanut company.  “According to the Minnesota Department of Health and Minnesota Department of Agriculture, the Minnesota laboratory analyses on the contamination in the already-opened container of peanut butter have the same genetic fingerprint as the cases in the national outbreak that has sickened almost 400 people in 42 states.”

“Eating food contaminated with salmonella can result in abdominal cramping, diarrhea, and fever,” according to the United States Food and Drug Administration.  “Most people infected with salmonella develop the symptoms 12 to 72 hours after infection.  The illness usually lasts 4 to 7 days, and most people recover with treatment.”

When PCA recently expanded its recall, Price Chopper followed suit, distributing a list of items that can be returned to the store for a full refund.  The list includes: 24 oz. Price Chopper regular sundae cones; 16 oz. Price Chopper Round Top sundae cones; 16 oz. Price Chopper Round Top sundae cones with fudge; 12 oz. Full Circle Master Zen party mix; 8 oz. Full Circle mixed nuts, roasted and salted; 12 oz. Full Circle Mocha Madness mixed bag; and 14 oz. Full Circle Mocha Madness mixed tubs.
