What women should be honored with a historical marker in Guilderland?
To the Editor:
We have 38 historical markers in the town of Guilderland. Inspired by the women’s march on Saturday, I went to Alice Begley’s book and reviewed them all.
Out of all 38, there is one reference to a woman on a marker and that is the Knower House marker on Main Street in Altamont. Cornelia Knower is referenced as marrying William Marcy who would later become governor of New York.
Surely there are women either in the past or even present that could be honored with a historical-marker designation. Could you and the readers of The Altamont Enterprise recall or point out some women that could be so honored?
The Altamont Enterprise recently had a wonderful article on women who by their skills have a major hand in running this town. It doesn't have to be a well-known woman but a person of influence or community caregiver. Teachers, clergy, physicians, business owners, mothers should all be thought of.
Catskill Castings is still making these signs and there is a foundation to finance these markers. I am anxious to hear the response of the Guilderland community.
