VOORRHEESVILLE — The elementary school doors are open, and the administration is hoping to bring in community members to share their expertise with children.

A series of after-school programs, called Go Beyond, will offer students, from kindergarten through fifth grade, the chance to learn from parents or other adults who live locally.

The idea came from the school’s site-based management team, which is made up of teachers, teachers’ aides, parents, and himself, Principal Thomas Reardon said.  Essentially, it’s “a big suggestion box,” he said, and the group wanted to give students a chance to explore activities in a way that they ordinarily wouldn’t.

It will be a hands-on program, he said, explaining that one session might focus on making a craft out of recycled materials, so all grade levels can participate with varying degrees of complexity.

A handful of people, including an engineer and a juggler, have expressed interest so far, Reardon said, and the management team will meet soon to figure out scheduling.

The program will offer “experiential learning,” he said, based on the premises of, “Let’s work on something together.”
