BERNE — Police say they arrested Travis S. Richardson, 28, of Berne, on Wednesday for domestic violence charges that include strangling a woman with a towel while her children watched.

The woman called police Wednesday morning to report the incident, which had occurred the night before in Berne, according to a report from the Albany County Sheriff’s Office.

A police investigation revealed that Richardson had used a towel to strangle the woman until she was unconscious, the report says. Their two young children watched parts of the attack, according to the report.

The woman was evaluated by emergency responders from the Sheriff’s Office and was brought to Albany Medical Center for further evaluation, the report says.

Richardson was charged with second-degree strangulation, a felony, as well as two counts of endangering the welfare of a child, third-degree assault, second-degree unlawful imprisonment, and fourth-degree criminal mischief, all misdemeanors.

He was arraigned in Berne Town Court before Judge Alan Zuk where an order of protection was issued for the victim. Richardson was sent to Albany County’s jail in lieu of $5,000 bail and is due back in court on April 22.
