Schools must not lose sight of the real world

To the Editor:

What's getting lost in all the conversations about Common Core, standardized testing, teacher evaluations, funding, and the power politics in the educational establishment is the real world in which the students will ultimately have to live.

That's not a world of multiple-choice tests, organized learning, isolated performance, and established answers to orthodox questions. It's a world of innovation, self-directed learning, working on ever-shifting teams, and working together to not only solve problems that are given, but also to raise questions no one has yet thought of.

How does all the great stuff the Guilderland Central School District is doing prepare students to succeed in that world?
