United States Navy Korean War veteran Joseph Persico, who died in August, is honored at a ceremony on Jan. 5, where his brother, Richard Persico, left, was given the American flag that flew over the United States Capitol. Richard Persico’s wife, Barbara, also attended the ceremony, along with a Persico cousin, and retired newspaper editor and memoirist Harry Rosenfeld, right. The ceremony was hosted by Daniel P. McCoy, the Albany County executive and Paul Tonko, the 20th District congressman. Charles Burkes, the former director of the Albany County Veterans Bureau, was on hand.

A veteran’s salute: Joseph Persico, who wrote speeches for Governor Nelson A. Rockefeller and co-authored a book with Colin Powell, is posthumously honored while Taps plays at a ceremony in the American Legion Joseph E. Zaloga Post 1520 in Albany on Monday. Persico, who had lived in Guilderland, also served on the American Battle Monuments Commission and served on the commission charged with the design and creation of the World War II Memorial on The Mall in Washington, D.C. Seven of his words — “Here we mark the price of freedom” — are inscribed on the memorial.
