Westerlo Library Notes for Thursday, November 10, 2016

Striped leggings and polka-dot socks disappear into a fire truck on Nov. 5 as Assistant Chief Andrew Joslin demonstrates Westerlo Volunteer Fire Company’s fire-fighting apparatus at an open house. The volunteers also presented a fire-prevention program at the Westerlo Library.

A big thank-you to Lisa Joslin and the Westerlo Volunteer Fire Company!

The company’s Nov. 5 fire prevention program at the library and open house at the fire station, was informative — a whole lot of fun! The children were thrilled to get a close-up look at the fire truck and climb inside.

And we were all impressed by the demonstrations of forcible entry and power extrication tools.

Trustees meet

The Board of Library Trustees will meet on Monday, Nov. 14, at 7 p.m. at the library. This is an open public meeting.

Memoir writing group

The new Memoir Writing Group will meet this Saturday, Nov. 12, at 11 a.m. This group provides its members a safe place to learn together with people that are accepting and supportive. The group is about creating, not criticism. t is about the practice of remembering and writing. It is not about publishing, polishing or picking out the problems.

Led by Lila Hollister Smith, this group is open to all who are interested in self-expression through the art of writing. The group meets once a month on the second Saturday of each month and new members are welcomed.

Lila is a founding member of the Capital District Textile Artists group and leads the Westerlo Library Quilting Group. She also teaches, gives trunk show talks and exhibits in art galleries.

Book talk

The library book discussion group will meet next Thursday, Nov. 17 at 7 p.m. at the library. Join us this autumn as we “Fall Into a Good Book.” If you’re looking for adventure, a good book can take you there.  We’re going to read for pure pleasure and share our favorites with the group. New members are welcome!

After school

Join Miss Lee on Monday afternoons from 3:30 to 4:30 p.m. for homework help, games, crafts, puzzles, music, and a lot more.  Programs will also include storytelling, hands-on demonstrations, and visits from special guests. Lee is also available on Thursdays from 3 to 8 p.m. for homework help.

Story time

From 11 a.m. to noon on Wednesday mornings Miss Lee presents stories, songs, and movement activities designed for infants to children up to 5 years old. In addition to developing pre-reading skills, singing, moving to music, and playing instruments all help foster a sense of rhythm and timing that are essential elements in developing the part of a child’s brain that shapes math skills.

Storytimes are also a great opportunity to meet other parents of small children in Westerlo.

Technology Walk-In Wednesdays

Do you have a new smartphone or tablet, but don’t know how to download e-books? Need to brush up on your computer skills or obtain basic skills? See Amy on Wednesdays between 10 a.m. and 1 p.m. for free, personalized, one-on-one instruction.

Family game night

Drop in on Thursdays between 5 and 8 p.m. Try one of our board games or bring your own. This unstructured program is open to all ages and you need not be accompanied by a child to participate.
