Singers sought “Tributes” to be the theme of Depot Lane spring concerts

The Depot Lane Singers, a community chorus based in Schoharie, is looking for singers to join it for its 2015 spring concerts.  The theme for this year's program will be “Tributes.”  The singers will pay homage, in song, to such diverse entities as cities, composers, musical genres, the American armed forces, cultures, the emotion of love, and the art of music itself.

Rehearsals will begin on Tuesday, Jan. 13, and will be held at the Depot Lane Theatre building in Schoharie, beginning at 7:30 p.m.

The concert will include the music of classical composers, such as Ludwig von Beethoven’s “Hallelujah” from the “Mount of Olives” and Thomas Morley’s 16th-Century favorite, “Now is the Month of Maying.”  The Beatles’ “Let it Be” and Sting’s “Fields of Gold” will offer musical contrast, as will the “Hallelujah” of Leonard Cohen.

The “Armed Forces Salute,” arranged by Joyce Eilers, and John Williams’s “America, the Dream Goes On” will pay tribute to America and each of the branches of the military.

The Singers will continue its recent practice of presenting two performances of its spring program.  Concerts are scheduled for Friday, May 1, at the Duanesburg Reformed Presbyterian Church, and Saturday, May 2, at Schoharie High School.  Both concerts will begin at 7:30 p.m. In addition, the Singers will appear as special guests of the Schoharie Valley Concert Band at their concerts on April 24 and 26.

The Depot Lane Singers was founded by the late Frances B. Tripp, Schoharie High School music teacher, in September 1979, after her retirement from active teaching.  Currently under the direction of Conductor Mitch Haverly, the chorus, accompanied by Mary Jane Bianchine, is in its 36th concert season.
