Sarah Slack honored

Sarah Slack, an alumna of Guilderland High School, has been named a Math for America Master Teacher.

The program awards a four-year, $60,000 fellowship to math and science public school teachers. The designation allows her take and teach workshops as teachers share best practices.

Slack teaches eighth-grade general science and earth science at Sunset Park Prep in Brooklyn.

“She is so fluent in science that every conversation is a learning experience, but never with a hint of condescension,” wrote a colleague of hers at Sunset Park, James Cordara, in recommending her for the fellowship.

“In a heterogeneous classroom in NYC, one can expect thirty students with a variety of reading levels, English language fluency, ethnic backgrounds, family lives, etc. To be one of those thirty can be an isolating experience but Ms. Slack ensures that every student learns in a safe, welcoming environment,” he also wrote.

She is the daughter of Altamont residents Joseph Slack and Judy Slack, a member of the Guilderland School Board.
