Kids raised here can’t afford to live here

To the Editor:

Our children deserve better.

The town of New Scotland and in particular the village of Voorheesville provide many advantages when you look at the proximity to Albany, the high quality education our children get, and the low crime rate compared to locations that we all see highlighted on TV each night.

Both the town and village, however, have determined that these advantages are not for our own children.  When you look at all the new housing developments, which our leaders are so very proud to point to, you see that they consist of homes with values far exceeding the abilities of our children to afford.

Even once our children have graduated from college they still can’t afford the housing being constructed in the town and village.   The federal and state governments have allowed the cost of college to become such a burden on those attending that they graduate already far in debt.

The local governments encourage these developments such as those being built in the town of New Scotland and Voorheesville with prices that far exceed their capability to afford them.  Our children graduate from school and quickly realize that they must move to more affordable locations.

It is time that our village and town leaders begin to improve the village and town that was handed to them.  As you drive around the town of New Scotland and the village of Voorheesville, you notice no changes, no new businesses,  just more expensive developments and associated increased traffic and higher taxes.
