A profound lesson in caring

To the Editor:
On March 23, 2024, many of you will remember we had a severe ice storm where electricity was out over a wide area. This, needless to say, created dangerous situations for some of us due to downed wires.

My family was one of those caught in the crosshairs of this predicament, as our giant maple came down in front of our house directly onto the power line.

For over 30 hours this tree occasionally caught fire inches from our barn from the live wire it was attached to as the line arched in the road, also setting fire to the lilac in front of our house.

The Knox fire department, with Berne and Altamont support, went above and beyond to protect our home and farm. I am eternally grateful to the volunteer firefighters who kept watch over our home and made sure it didn’t go up like a tinderbox while we slept.

During those 30 hours, I learned once again how lucky we are to live in our small community. It was a profound reminder of how important it is that we all take care of each other. Many, many thanks.

Earl Barcomb
