Join us in preserving Altamont’s historic character

To the Editor:
I am very pleased to introduce the “new” Historic Altamont to our community. We have four new officers and many new goals.

Our primary mission is the preservation of the unique historic character of the village of Altamont. To achieve this, Historic Altamont supports the conservation of green space around Altamont, an initiative called the Helderberg Greenway.

The Greenway will consist of existing and future preserved land extending from the Helderberg Escarpment, around the village of Altamont, to the Bozen Kill Gorge. Much of this space has already been preserved.

The end result will be a six-mile public corridor surrounding Altamont providing spectacular scenery and the potential for walking trails around the village.

Historic Altamont is excited to announce that our ARPA [American Rescue Plan Act] grant has been approved. Some of the grant money will be used to hire a consultant to create a trail network plan for the Altamont area. The plan will include existing trails and potential locations for future trails.

With the remaining funds, Historic Altamont plans on building an Altamont-themed kiosk at a site in the village. The kiosk will be used to distribute information about community activities, nearby attractions, and local businesses.

Historic Altamont is working on an online walking tour of Altamont. It will showcase the unique features of Altamont including historical markers, parks and preserves, churches, cemeteries, gardens, and more.  Talks are underway to include the highly successful Museum In The Streets. We welcome everyone’s input.

If you are interested in local cemetery and gravestone restoration, we have a committee dedicated to that task. You can see their efforts at the Severson Cemetery on Brandle Road.

Our new Facebook page will be online soon. It will include a meeting schedule and announcements.  Historic Altamont meets at the Altamont Reformed Church on Lincoln Avenue. Our meetings are open to the public. Our email address is . Send us an email, we would like to hear from you.

Come join us.  Together, we can make a difference.
