Marching band meets fund-raising goal

BERNE — The Berne-Knox-Westerlo Marching Band, which had been cut from this year’s budget, has been revived after it raised $2,914 — more than enough funds for the band to lead this year’s Memorial Day parades through the Hilltowns and Altamont.

The district’s marching band was one of the programs cut during last year’s budget crisis. Since then, the band has been raising funds in the hope that it might get to march in this year’s parades.

The BluesTones, a local classic-rock band composed of parents of current and former BKW students, played a benefit concert last Saturday at the Township Tavern in Knox that brought the marching band just over its $2,800 goal.

The band was able to raise funds from a number of sources over the past year:

— At the 2010 Memorial Day parades, $300;

— From the BKW community, $720;

— From John Boone Inc., $250;

— From the Kiwanis Club, $200;

— From the BKW Parent-Teacher Association, $350;

— From the BKW Alumni Association, $300;

— From the Berne Fire Department, $250;

— From the Knox Fire Department, $250; and

— From the BluesTones benefit, $294.
