John R. Davis

VOORHEESVILLE — John R. Davis, a local business owner and devoted family man, died on Thursday, Oct. 21, 2010, at St. Peter’s Hospital in Albany after a brief illness. He was 74.

Born in Rensselaer, Mr. Davis was the son of the late Robert Baxter and Ellen Tilley Davis.

A resident of Voorheesville since 1965, he worked for Alco Equipment in Albany for 23 years, retiring as a branch manager in 1988. He then began a partnership with his sons and formed New Scotland Paving Inc. in Voorheesville, which is now owned and operated by his son, Randy Davis.

Beginning in 1997, John Davis worked for his son Greg Davis at Greg’s Towing and Repairs, Inc.

Mr. Davis was charter member number six of the Guilderland Elks Lodge.

Along with his beloved wife of 53 years, Dorothy Morris Davis, whom he met at Guptill’s Skating Arena in Latham, he raised three sons.

He enjoyed Monday night dinners with his grandchildren, watching car races in which his sons were involved, and visiting the Lebanon Valley Speedway. He also enjoyed casinos, watching the Yankees, and traveling to Las Vegas with his wife and their best friends, Freddy and Joyce.

In addition to his wife, Mr. Davis is survived by his sons, Greg R. Davis and Yvonne Richard, of Voorheesville, Randy J. Davis, and Debbie Proper, of Berne, and Richard J. Davis, and his wife, Jennifer, of Troy; his sisters, Carol Tonkin, and her husband, Ish, of Rensselaer, and Phyllis Hill, and her husband, Bob, of Rensselaer; his brother, Dennis Davis, and his wife, Veronica, of East Greenbush; and his grandchildren, Jenelle, Ashley, Bryan, Melanie, and Ashley.

Barbara Gardner died before him.

A service was held at the Reilly and Son Funeral Home, in Voorheesville, on Oct. 24.

The family would like to extend a special thank you to the doctors and nurses on the fifth floor at St. Peter’s Hospital, especially Jenna and Kelly.

Charlotte Tomajer

ALTAMONT — Charlotte Tomajer, a beautician and excellent cook and seamstress, died on Oct. 20, 2010, after a long illness. She was 88.

Mrs. Tomajer was born on in Coxsackie May 12, 1922, the daughter of the late Floyd K. and Lida Blackmer Harris.

She graduated from Coxsackie High School and Austin Beauty School, and worked as a beautician for many years. She also worked for the state’s Department of Transportation, before retiring in 1983.

Mrs. Tomajer spent many winters with her husband, William, in Florida. She loved to play golf, crochet, and was good at cooking and sewing.

She was a member of Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 7062 Ladies’ Auxiliary, and she and her husband organized and worked at the VFW booth at the Altamont Fair for many years.

In addition to her husband, she is survived by her children, Charlene Stevens and her husband, David, of Altamont, Craig Peters, and his wife, Joann, of Oxford, Conn., Kerry Peters, and his wife, Barbara, of Altamont, and Jeffrey T. Burt, of Altamont; her stepchildren, Winston Burt, and his wife, Ellen, of Valatie, Stephen Burt, of Poughkeepsie, Kenneth Burt, and his wife, Ronnie, of Queensbury, David Burt, of Poughkeepsie, and Janet Fennell, and her husband, William, of Mechanicville.

She is also survived by 12 grandchildren; 10 great-grandchildren; her brother, Nelson Harris, of Cleverdale; and several nieces and nephews.

Her husbands, Gerald T. Peters and Winston C. Burt, died before her, as did two brothers, Floyd K. Harris Jr. and Richard L. Harris, and her daughter-in-law, Kathleen Burt.

A funeral service was held at the W. C. Brady’s Sons, Inc. Funeral Home in Coxsackie on Oct. 26, with the Reverend Retta Lykens officiating. Interment followed in the family plot at The Riverside Cemetery in Coxsackie.
