Come home to the varsity football game

To the Editor:

No need to board a bus or pay hundreds of dollars for a ticket. Some of the best sports action around is right here in Voorheesville.

The Blackbirds varsity football team (3-0) has put forth a tremendous team effort, with every single player contributing something to the game these past few weeks: a pass, a tackle, a run, a kick, a block, a score.

We’ve seen “plays of the week” on news station highlight reels and Coach Joe Sapienza achieve 100 career wins, while being named Teacher of the Week by a local news station.

Our boys look healthy, strong, and sharp in those magical new uniforms. Even more importantly, we are seeing examples of excellent sportsmanship on the field and off.

With the homecoming game against Taconic Hills coming up on Saturday, Sept. 27, I truly hope that these athletes are bolstered to continued greatness by a swell of cheering fans. You can see that your applause, cheers, and yes — even your cowbells and vuvuzelas — mean a lot to these guys.

It’s a great way to spend family time with all generations from youth to senior, to return once again to your alma mater, and to recall your own football memories — once a Blackbird, always a Blackbird. See you on Saturday at 1 p.m. as the pride of Voorheesville take the field once again.
