Bringing books to life

Stories are literally felt in Berne when kids use the cutouts made by Maddi King, left, and Emily Shafer — both girl Scouts in Troop 1758.

To the Editor:

For our Girl Scout Silver Award project, the highest award a middle school girl can earn, we recreated children’s books into felt storybooks. We decided to do this because we are trying to encourage kids to enjoy reading.

These felt boards are being used in the Berne library and kindergarten program. We completed this project with the help of Ms. Kathy Stempel, director of youth services at the library; Mrs. Jean Forti; Mrs. Maria Shafer; and Annielaura Shafer.
