Legion did an awesome job raising over $10K for Soldier On

To the Editor:

I have lived in the village of Altamont for about six-and-a-half years, and I love the feel of a small, intimate village. It is wonderful how people show support for others and participate together in events, such as concerts and films in the park, strawberry socials, Victorian house tours, book signings, and many others.

I am a member of the Helderberg American Legion Post 977 and this past Saturday we sponsored a Poker Run motorcycle ride to raise money for Soldier On, the organization that builds housing for homeless vets. A new one is proposed for Albany County at the site of the former Ann Lee Home. All money raised from the event will go to this organization.

I think it is great that a local Legion post would take on an event of this magnitude. The planning that goes into the event starts months before with solicitations from vendors and sponsors, making banners, printing registration packets, and deciding on the menu and lining up people to do the cooking and baking. The Legion Riders do most of the work with other members and the auxiliary helping too.

Again, I feel privileged to be a part of this group that would do so much for our veterans. Last year’s event raised around $10,000 for the Wounded Warriors organization. This year’s event has surpassed that amount. Awesome job, Legion members!
