Town officials think money grows on trees

To the Editor:

Sitting in my college dorm, 250 miles from home, I am astonished (then again, not really) to see our little town of Knox is (yet again) raising the already high taxes, a whopping 3.14 percent, on its citizens.

Year after year, it’s another tax increase after another. It seems as if town officials think money grows on our trees or something.

I would like to know if Mrs. [Councilwoman Amy] Pokorny stands by her comments from a letter to the editor, published on Oct. 23, 2013, stating, “He [Supervisor Hammond] understands how to run the town and keep our taxes low.” Or how about, “He [Supervisor Hammond] has a respectful, informed, conservative way of governing…?”

To me, and probably anyone else, this is in no way, shape, or form, a “conservative” way of governing. No wonder so many people are leaving not just our town, but the state in general. I will certainly remember these comments come next year’s election.

If we ever allow businesses here, they would bring a much needed tax base to this dying town.

We cannot continue to live with this ruling party anymore. Knox citizens need to rise up and bring some common sense back to this town!

Editor’s note: Knox's preliminary 2015 budget raises the overall amount of taxes under the control of the town board to be levied by 3.14 percent; this does not exceed the state-set limit.
