BKW is not a wealthy district, but it has a wealth of dedicated and deserving students

To The Editor:

What an incredible year this has been for the J. Wyatt Spencer Memorial Scholarship!  Our first two Berne-Knox-Westerlo co-recipients, Kayla Heath and Taylor O’Connor, are now firmly entrenched in their first semester of college and we couldn’t be prouder of them or the fact that our scholarship is helping them along their path.

Wyatt is, no doubt, smiling down upon them.

Additionally, our pride extends to the rest of Wyatt’s BKW 2014 graduating classmates and the way that they carried Wyatt with them in all that they accomplished at BKW and continue to carry him as they go forth into the world. In reflection of that, our scholarship has been renamed as the “Wyatt Spencer Memorial — BKW ’14 Alumni Scholarship.”  We feel this is an apt tribute to the character these young men and women have displayed.

We are currently in the midst of some fast and furious preparations for our fourth annual golf tournament to raise funds for the scholarship.  It is being held this year at Altamont’s own Orchard Creek Golf Course on Oct. 11, with a shotgun start at noon and a scramble format.  The cost of golf is $125 per golfer and includes 18 holes, cart, lunch, specialty hole admission and a fabulous dinner afterwards.

If you don’t or can’t golf and would like to just join us for the dinner and drawings, the cost is just $35. We have an incredible, incomparable basket drawing every year (thanks to generous contributions from many area businesses and individuals) and this year we have two amazing additional drawings.  The first: Two mounted and framed Masters’ Tournament Pin Flags, one autographed by Gary Player, the other by Jack Nicklaus. The second: A one-week vacation for four people in Myrtle Beach, South Carolina at one of many Wyndham Resorts with 4 x 4-somes of golf at many PGA golf courses.

We are looking for golfers, dinner guests, sponsors (great advertising!), and donors.  For $100 we will make a placard of business or organization logos and place them at one of the 18 holes on the course.

We also will gratefully accept any items donated for our basket drawing and monetary donations from interested individuals, businesses, and organizations. Numbers have to be turned into Orchard Creek by Oct. 7, so don’t delay if you’d like to join us.

For further information, please call me at 618-9832.

We have always been beyond grateful for the outpouring of support that the communities The Enterprise reaches have shown us.  We hope this year’s tournament will be the most successful yet and allow us to continue the legacy Wyatt Spencer left to our care and honor the lessons of loyalty and love that his classmates have taught us.

BKW is not a wealthy school district, but it does have a wealth of dedicated and deserving students. Come see what it’s all about, and join us on Oct. 11 for a wonderful and enjoyable event. We promise you it will be a day to remember and bond together as a community for a very worthy cause!
