We’re looking for a good squash and lots of hair

To the Editor:

Plans are in place for the Second Annual Berne Summerfest, and we want your readers to know we have a day filled with something for everyone.

We are announcing two new contests this year: For those with green thumbs, we are having a GadZooks! Get Zuked! Zucchini Contest for the biggest zucchinis, as well as categories for animal and human lookalikes, and, for the hirsute inclined, it’s Berne’s first-ever Beard and Moustache Championship with various categories from stubble to lengthy and everything in between.

Pie lovers, don’t despair — the pie contest is back with an additional category for kid bakers.  Everyone is welcome to enter; all winners will become honorary Hilltowners regardless of the address of squash or facial hair growth (or oven).

Again this year, we’ll have local bands and talent, vendors, classic and antique cars and trucks, and lots of great food as well as a new demonstrations area and a fun children’s activities tent with face painting and craft time.

Come and see live birds of prey with Mike Gaylo, the director of Hawks, Owls & Wildlife, at 2 p.m., and then dissect owl pellets to identify what they eat with the help of the Audubon Society of the Capital Region.

Baseball fans can slug away in two home-run derbies and an adult softball game.  Kids and adults can scale the 24-foot climbing wall from 3 to 5 p.m. – where everyone climbs free courtesy of the Berne Youth Council.

Support the Berne-Knox-Westerlo Little League and feast on the chicken, pork, and rib barbecue starting at 4 p.m., and stay to enjoy fireworks at the end of the evening.

So, gentlemen, put away those razors; gardeners, pour on the fertilizer; and everyone plan on heading to the hills for the Berne Summerfest on Saturday, Aug. 23, starting at noon. (The rain date is Aug. 24).

Admission to the festival is free.  For directions, details, and a complete schedule, see our website: www.townofberne.wix.com/summerfest or contact Karen Schimmer at [email protected] or 872-2544.
