Kenneth M. Anthony

ALTAMONT — A lifelong Altamont resident, long known as “Anthony the Washerman,” Kenneth M. Anthony died on Monday, Sept. 8, 2014, after suffering a heart attack.

Born on Aug. 12, 1930, Mr. Anthony was the son of the late Merwin J. Anthony and Anna Blessing Anthony, and graduated from Draper High School.

In 1959, he married Karen Levey, and was a loving father to three children and grandfather to five. Their marriage ended only with her death, in 2003.

Mr. Anthony’s father, Merwin, established the firm Anthony The Washerman in 1924, and Mr. Anthony joined the firm at age 17. Later, he became the co-owner, and then, owner of the company, which specialized in selling and repairing washers, dryers, and dishwashers.

Mr. Anthony was a Freemason with the Noah Lodge and enjoyed bowling with the Altamont Businessmen’s bowling league. He was also a member of the Hudson-Mohawk Chapter of the Pioneer Gas Engine Association, more commonly known as The Gas Up, his family wrote in a tribute.

“Ken loves this event and would spend Father’s Day there,” the family wrote. And, they wrote, he was an avid hunter and talented golfer.

“He will be missed by pretty much anyone who met him,” the tribute said.

Mr. Anthony is survived by his children, Kenneth R. Anthony, and his wife, Rachelle Anthony, Jill Anthony and her husband, Leif Zurmuhlen, and Bonnie Kate Anthony, and her husband P. Joshua Hatala; his grandchildren, Rebecca, Bradley, Veronica, Finn, and Piper; his sister, Beverly Marx, and all his extended family and many friends.

A memorial service, which is open to the public, will be held at the Altamont Reformed Church, 129 Lincoln Ave., Altamont, on Sunday, Oct. 11 at 3 p.m.

Memorial contributions may be made to Rotterdam Challengers Tri-County Baseball League, Post Office Box 102, Pattersonville, NY 12137, or The Gas Up, 106 Murphy Road, Schoharie, NY 12157.
