A Burning Need – More Volunteers

Is there a fire in you? The slogan for this year’s Recruit New York is meant to attract members to volunteer fire departments as the number of volunteers declines while the number of paid firefighters increases. Curiosity starts at an early age, at left, as two tykes, too timid to board the truck, stand near their mother while Westmere Fire Department First Lieutenant Chris Hausgaard shows them what hoses firefighters use, fourth slide.

Each department uses helmets, like those in the first slide, to symbolize different members’ ranks, starting with green for safety officer, red for lieutenant, white for chief, yellow for captain, black for regular firefighters, and orange for junior members under the age of 18.

Getting details on how to become a member, second slide, Hector Ferraris, left, at Sunday’s open house, talks with Hausgaard at Westmere where three new applicants signed up. Other Guilderland departments had similar numbers: McKownville with two, Guilderland with four, and Altamont with two.

William Hausler, 6, third slide, wanted to see what it felt like to wear firefighters’ gear. His buddies, Alex Sanchez and Felton White, donned similar garb, perhaps getting ready to join the ranks in another decade.

Spring Comes to Our Villages

With the warmth and budding trees comes the urge to be outdoors. Many took advantage of Tuesday’s weather by working in their yards or just enjoying nature. Carl Fusco-Gessick, fourth slide, of Altamont put a lawn chair in his driveway and began reading a good book, Game of Thrones by George R. R. Martin. Jeff Quin, third slide, took his 4-year-old daughter, Julia, for a bike ride in Voorheesville. Robert White, fifth slide, removed trees and branches from his lawn in Altamont, while just down the road Jeff Livingston, first slide, began breaking ground on his garden with a Roto-Tiller. In Voorheesville, the tulip garden of the Eberhard family, second slide, was in full bloom as the couple worked in their gardens.

Muscles Soar with Lunges, Tricks and Bends

On Wellness Day, students at Voorheesville secondary school attended workshops and activities aimed at helping them adopt healthy lifestyles. The school invited a number of fitness- related community groups and businesses to take part in the day’s lessons.

March 21 began with the “Rise Above” BMX bike show where stuntmen showed off their tricks, such as performer Cory Yarbrough jumping high above special education teacher’s assistant Wayne Bowmanchester, left. Juniors Andrew Pevzner and Slater Nolan, bottom right, learn to fence against one another, while Linda Conway, lower left, teaches Yoga. Zumba, rugby, golf, nutrition, bicycle and driving safety, were also featured.

Dodging Hunger

Cheers propel the players, slide 4, and add to the sound and fury fueling the fifth annual dodge-ball tournament at Guilderland High School on Friday night.

Teams were tagged with outrageous names, many of them amply illustrated on their T-shirts. Behind all the fun was a serious cause — raising funds to feed the hungry by stocking the local food pantry.

Aiming at their target, slide 2, members of Bad To The Bone release their dodge balls. The different sides of competition show, at bottom, as a teacher playing for the Sharp Shooters enjoys a laugh, slide 1, while determination reins supreme for a student on The Yahoos team, slide 3.

Bulldogs Chew Up Cats

For the first time in school history, Berne-Knox-Westerlo hosted both a girls’ and boys’ sectional basketball game, back to back, on Tuesday. Each team won its Class C first-round game in a blow out –– the boys, 74 to 44, over Maple Hill, and the girls, 71 to 46, over Canajoharie –– and so many fans packed the school that closed-circuit television had to be run to the auditorium.

Senior Liz Harvey, far left, who scored 18 points, slices past the Cougars’ defense, while Makayla McCormick, middle left, who scored 14 points, goes up for a lay-up. Mary Salo added a triple-double for the Bulldogs with 14 points, 11 rebounds, and 11 blocks. “We really click on all cylinders when everyone contributes,” girls’ Head Coach Tom Galvin said. “If we play to our capability, then we should be able to win.” BKW (18-1), the third seed, plays Greenwich, the 11th seed, on Friday at 6 p.m. at Maple Hill.

The BKW boys will play Lake George, the second seed, at Shenendehowa on Friday at 8 p.m. after “sucking Maple Hill’s energy right out of the building” on Tuesday, Coach Andy Wright said. The Bulldogs ran the Wildcats down with depth and quick transition play. Senior Garrett Pitcher, middle right, who scored 26 points, goes up for a shot. Jake Farnam, far right, who had six rebounds and five steals, grabs the ball out of mid-air. “We have a legitimate shot to make a playoff run,” Wright said. “We will not go out without a competitive game, and we have Garrett as our X-Factor.”

Vaulting to States

Hands raised high: Guilderland’s Hailey Marini smiles from the podium, middle right, after taking the Section 2 all-around title with a score of 35.275, winning by 0.45 over last year’s winner, Rema Bianco of Saratoga, next to her. Claire Levy, far left, will also be going to States, qualifying in Vault and Uneven Parallel Bars.

Emma Drislane, at far right, does her routine on the balance beam during the Feb. 13 Section 2 gymnastics championships at Shaker High School. Drislane scored a 7.850 and she’ll be going to States for the Floor Exercise with a score of 8.950. The state championships will be held March 2 at Smithtown East High School in Saint James (Section 11).

Helping Guilderland to another runner-up title for Section 2, behind perennial winner Saratoga, is Megan Szesnat, at far left, as she prepares to leap off the vault. Szesnat scored a 7.400 and Guilderland’s overall score was 167.850.

Rounding out the team going to States from Guilderland is Jaclyn Levy, at middle left, Claire’s twin. Here, Levy performs on the Floor during the Section 2 championships, scoring 8.850. Levy qualified for the Vault and is an alternate for the Uneven Parallel Bars and Floor Exercise.
