To the Editor:
The Altamont Free Library’s seventh annual “I Love My Library” Gala will take place on Saturday, Feb. 23, from 5:30 to 9:30 p.m. in the Altamont Village Community Room.
This year’s theme will be “Celebration!” to mark the opening of the library’s new home in the fully renovated 1897 Delaware & Hudson train station. The library has had a tremendous first six months.
Our circulation is up 25 percent and many people who couldn’t visit the library in the basement now do. Proceeds from this year’s gala will help us meet this increase in demand, and help cover the expenses that come with having a home of our own.
The library and the Gala’s Honorary Committee will be honoring Mayor James Gaughan for his ongoing support in preserving our community’s historic landmark. Through his dedicated and visionary leadership, the Altamont Free Library is now a unique venue for cultural, educational, and community events and provides a permanent place for the community’s library.
In addition, Keith Lee is being honored for his legacy of volunteerism, beautification, and reinvestment in the community that has helped to preserve the unique character of Altamont.
Through countless hours of volunteer work, Mr. Lee has been instrumental in leading the beautification effort by creating, maintaining, and improving the gardens and landscapes at our parks and public spaces in and around Altamont for many years.
Mr. Lee spearheaded the effort to gather volunteers and master gardeners to prepare and plant the landscaping at the new library.
Please join us for an evening of fine food, including a delicious dinner catered by Elegant Touch, an array of sumptuous desserts and of course, the highly popular silent and live auctions! You may make your reservation by calling Pat Spohr at 861-6939.
If you have an item to donate (gift certificates, artwork, vacation rentals, specialized services, gift baskets, etc.) or would be interested in soliciting donations on behalf of the library, please call Library Director Judith Wines at 861-7239 to see how you can help.
Once again, the board and staff wish to thank the community, including our patrons, volunteers, and supporters as well as our state and local officials for their continued support.
