To the Editor:
A customer stopped into the shop the other day and commented that I hadn’t written anything here lately. True — burned out — needed a respite.
I’m a big fan of Ann Coulter and contribute to her blog at anncoulter.com. She’s going through the same thing. We’ve all needed a break from politics.
If it were summertime, I would be elbows deep in gardening. But it’s cold and gray outside.
So I’ve been making soup (potato with bacon and ham, split pea with ham, and bean with bacon so far) and reading instead. The trouble is what I’ve been reading.
When I was younger, I read fiction: Isaac Asimov, Stephen King, J.R.R. Tolkien. But now it’s all non-fiction.
I got “Mugged” on Christmas day. I love saying it like that. Mugged is the title of Ann’s new book. She’s an amazing author. But be warned: If you read her books, you’re likely to have all your carefully cultivated childhood illusions exposed for the left-wing brainwashing it really was.
Can you handle the truth? If you’re like me, it will motivate you to action.
But it’s so much easier to sit on the couch and watch TV. Being motivated means giving up watching “The Walking Dead” or “Dancing with the Stars” and then you’ll be out of the loop in conversations with your friends and coworkers.
While I’ve been on my little respite (in case you haven’t noticed yet — that respite is over), people I’ve never known to be interested in politics have woken up and stepped into the breach with a vengeance.
Hunters and shooting sports aficionados have come alive with responses to liberal calls for more gun control (in forums that aren’t hostile to such points of view). And some have found there’s a connection between gun control and every other upside-down liberal policy they never paid any attention to before.
Meanwhile I’m watching the liberals in our public schools wringing their hands and gnashing their teeth over the predicament they’ve gotten themselves into.
Have you ever watched a dog chase its tail? Have you ever seen what they do once they’ve caught it? Now that’s entertainment!
