A host of international shops to open at Crossgates Mall

By Anne Hayden

GUILDERLAND — Crossgates Mall will welcome more than a dozen new stores over the next few months, continuing its goal to “bring in tenants that are unique to the Capital Region,” according to General Manager Joseph Castaldo.

Castaldo said the mall, owned by the Pyramid Management Group, has over 80 stores that can’t be found anywhere else within a two- or three-hour driving radius of Albany.

“We are very aggressive in our leasing,” said Castaldo.

Pyramid is parterning with the Retail Group of American to open 10 international-brand stores in the mall this year.

The mall isn’t trying to target a new demographic with the new shops. Rather, said Castaldo, “We are everything to everybody.”

Along with the new stores will come at least 75 job opportunities, he said.

Piecing together Valley with puzzle of businesses

By Marcello Iaia

SCHOHARIE — Pieces of a puzzle displaying Schoharie Valley can be found at businesses this weekend, as part of an effort to raise money for rebuilding homes in the valley devastated by flooding almost two years ago.

The 30 participating Schoharie Valley Association businesses will each have a piece of the 10-by-13-inch puzzle for visitors with special tote bags, obtained with a suggested donation of $5.

The association has organized the event, which starts this Saturday, May 11 and runs through the Oct. 14 weekend, and hopes to raise more than $10,000 for Schoharie Area Long Term (SALT), an organization channeling skilled labor, donations, and grants to meet needs left by tropical storms Irene and Lee in August 2011.

Around 60 properties still need to be totally rebuilt and as many as 300 homeowners in the county are are not complete rebuilding, said SALT volunteer director Jerrine Corallo. The reasons behind homeowners’ difficulty are often complicated, she said, but some run out of money working by themselves.

Oliva! to open at Stuyvesant

GUILDERLAND — Oliva!, which offers extra virgin olive oils and balsamic vinegars from around the world, will open at Stuyvesant Plaza this spring.

It will take over the space formerly occupied by Londonderry Café. As many as six new employees will be hired to staff the operation.

The Stuyvesant Plaza store marks the second Oliva! location for owner Kathy Connolly, who opened the original store in Clifton Park Center Mall in September 2012. A Capital Region native, Connolly’s interest in operating an olive oil boutique began five years ago after visiting a similar store on a trip to Maine.

The 900-square-foot location at Stuyvesant Plaza is being renovated and designed to resemble the Oliva! operation in Clifton Park, where shoppers can sample the selection of olive oils, vinegars and other products.

Oliva! olive oils are purchased in bulk from around the world and stored in stainless steel fustis — olive oil dispensers — to be bottled fresh for customers. The olive oils in stock at the store hail from Spain, Portugal, Italy, Tunisia, Australia, Greece and Chile, among other counties, and include award-winning Spanish Picual, Australian Hojiblanca, and Blood Orange-Infused Extra-Virgin Olive Oil as well as Dark Chocolate Balsamic Vinegar.

Beyond fresh olive oils and vinegars, Oliva! also offers artisan pastas, gourmet salts, Italian dipping dishes, and olive oil-based skin care products.
