Voorheesville Library Notes for Saturday, August 30, 2014

Have you left your summer assignments until nearly the last minute? On Friday Aug. 29, the Voorheesville Public Library is setting aside the community room to hold study hall for you. Teens can drop in anytime between 10 a.m. and 6 p.m., for a quiet, air-conditioned space to catch up with your summer work. Snacks will be provided, bring your own water bottle.  

Matinee and lecture

On Sunday, September 7 at 1:30 pm, everyone is welcome to attend this special free screening of 12 Years a Slave, and lecture given by historical expert Dr. Clifford Brown, Professor of Political Science at Union College.  Based on the 19th Century slave narrative by Solomon Northup, and 2014 Academy Award Winner, 12 Years a Slave captured the hearts and minds of audiences from around the world.  After the movie, Dr. Brown will lecture on the life of Solomon Northup, his ties to the local area, and provide details of Northup’s life after he regained his freedom.  There will also be a question and answer session. There will be a break between the movie and lecture at which time refreshments will be served. 

Book sale

Save the date: Friday Sept. 19 beginning at 5 p.m., is sneak preview night for Friends of the Library only. Saturday, Sept. 20, the doors open to the public at 10 a.m., and on Sunday, Sept. 21 the day begins with the Canine Classic 5K Run/Walk at 11 a.m., at The Village Animal Clinic, located across the street from the library. Leashed dogs are welcome and encouraged to participate in the run. All proceeds from the marathon will be donated to Guilderhaven, Inc., a not-for-profit that helps the animal community. The Sunday book sale buck-a-bag day begins at noon, and at 12:30 p.m. the fun kicks into high gear with local band Lifeline, a classic rock trio. You won’t want to miss a minute.

Holiday hours

In honor of Labor Day, the library will close at 6 p.m., on Friday, Aug. 29, and reopen at 10 a.m., on Tuesday, Sept. 2. If you have an overdue item, you may use our online catalog at www.voorheesvillelibrary.org. Regular hours will resume on Tuesday, Sept. 2.
