GPL Adventures

Kids in grades 3-5 are invited to join us for after-school fun on Thursday Nov. 14 at 3:30 p.m. with GPL Adventures:  Pipe Cleaner Ninjas and Dancers. Medicare open enrollment

Open enrollment season for Medicare runs until Dec. 7, so this is the ideal time to get all your questions answered.

On Fri.day Nov. 15 at 1 p.m., Janet Kiffney, a certified Medicare Counselor with HIICAP (New York State’s Health Insurance Information Counseling and Assistance Program), will present an unbiased and comprehensive overview, including:  Medicare Part A, Part B, and Part D; what Medicare covers; expected contribution; and prescription coverage, followed by a Q&A session.

Saturday STEAM

We’re thrilled to host our second of three author visits this month on Sunday Nov. 17 at 2 p.m. as Anne Easter Smith enthralls us with her prolific prose.

This award-winning historical fiction novelist is renowned for her six-book series, set during the Wars of the Roses. She is first and foremost a storyteller, whose passion for this period brings history to life through real and imaginary characters.

In particular, she is a recognized expert on King Richard III, England's most controversial king and the subject of This Son of York. Ms. Easter Smith will share excerpts from this final installment in her celebrated series, and summarize her decades of research which culminated in this just-released work.

Over 180 attended the Not-So-Spooky Story Time and Costume Parade at the Guilderland Public Library on Halloween morning.

So much happened in 1969. Among the many culturally-significant 50th anniversaries marked this year: Woodstock.

Mark Berger, author of “Something’s Happening Here: A Sixties Odyssey from Brooklyn to Woodstock,” was there to experience this seminal event. On Saturday, Nov. 9, at 2 p.m., he'll share his experience and read from his book chronicling this tumultuous time; what brought him to that meadow outside of Bethel, New York; and how this event shaped his future.

Mr. Berger will sell and sign copies of his book after the talk. Anyone who recalls this pivotal event and time period, or is intrigued by it, will find this book talk fascinating.

Alzheimer’s and dementia 

November is Alzheimer’s Awareness Month, and the second of two related programs we’re offering in partnership with the Alzheimer's Association of Northeastern New York, "Understanding Alzheimer's and Dementia,” is slated for Wednesday,  Nov. 13 at 6:00 p.m.

This program provides an overview for people facing a diagnosis, as well as caregivers and folks who simply wish to become better informed. Topics include:  the relationship between Alzheimer’s disease and dementia; how the brain is affected by Alzheimer’s; risk factors; three general stages of the disease; FDA-approved treatments to lessen some symptoms; what’s on the horizon for Alzheimer’s research; and helpful resources.  Please register online, by phone or in person.  

How to run for elective office

Perhaps you’ve considered throwing your hat into the ring, or just want to explore the steps necessary toward securing a spot on the ballot.  Find out on Wednesday, Nov. 13 at 7 p.m. as the Honorable Jennifer Corona, a one-time candidate for Family Court Judge, relays her experience in formulating a campaign for public office and qualifying for the primary ballot.

Medicare open enrollment

It's open enrollment season for Medicare, which often sparks questions:  What is Medicare Part A, Part B, and Part D? What does Medicare pay for?  What’s my expected contribution? How are prescriptions covered?

National Novel Writing Month

On Thursday, Oct. 31, children ages 19 months and up and their caregivers are invited to a Not-So-Spooky Costume Party and Story Time at the Guilderland Public Library at 10:30 a.m., complete with lively songs, stories, and dancing.

We’ll conclude with a rousing costume parade through the library. Then at 6 p.m., Stanley Kubrick’s classic thriller, “The Shining,” will fill our giant screen with larger-than-life horror. If you’ve never watched a movie here, you’re in for a sensory treat.

The trick is to hold on to your free popcorn while you shriek with delight!

Medieval and Renaissance Celebration

Treat yourself to some calming, meditative music at this month's GPL Sunday Concert series, Sunday Nov. 3 at 2 p.m. The Helderberg Madrigal Singers are collaborating with the Bleecker Consort to perform a lovely repertoire of Medieval and Renaissance music, played on period instruments. This uniquely captivating repertoire promises to be thoroughly delightful.

Family STEAM Night

The Siena Physics Club will be on hand Monday, Nov. 4 at 6:30 p.m. for our latest installment of Family STEAM [science, technology, engineering, art, math] Night. Self defense for women

This unique RAD (Rape Aggression Defense) class teaches women key skills, preparing them to face potentially dangerous situations with confidence and success. Taught by certified instructors of the Guilderland Police Department, this course incorporates lecture, discussion and techniques suitable for women of all ages and abilities.

It is inclusive to cis, trans, and/or nonbinary women, ages 16 and up. No prior experience is necessary, but seats are limited.  Participants must attend all three sessions. November is Alzheimer’s Month

We’re offering two Alzheimer’s-related programs during November in partnership with the Alzheimer's Association of Northeastern New York. Alzheimer’s is the sixth leading cause of death on the United States.  Almost 6 million individuals are living with the disease, while at least 16 million tirelessly serve as their unpaid caregivers. This global health crisis impacts numerous families right here in our community. However, no one has to face this disease alone or without information.

On Wednesday, Nov. 13, at 6 p.m., Mary Moller, MSW, CAS, author of “Alzheimer’s Through the Stages: A Caregiver’s Guide,” will be here to talk about her experience of working with both Alzheimer's patients and their families, and in particular about the importance of caregiver self-care. Ms. Moller is Program Specialist at the Center of Excellence for Alzheimer’s Disease, at Albany Medical Center, and her book has received very positive reviews on both amazon.com and goodreads.com. Drug Take-Back Day   

GPL is partnering once again with the Guilderland Police Department for the U.S. Drug Enforcement Administration's nationwide Drug Take-Back Day on Saturday Oct. 26, 10 a.m.to 2 p.m. 

This is a unified opportunity for the public to surrender expired, unwanted, or unused medications for proper disposal. Unwanted controlled, non-controlled, and non-prescription substances may be turned in to police officers stationed in the library's auxiliary parking lot. 

Please be sure to remove any identifying information from prescription labels.

We cannot accept sharps and syringes, nor can we accept any medications prior to Oct. 26 at 10 a.m.  This initiative is completely confidential; officials will not ask questions nor request identification. For further details, please see: https://takebackday.dea.gov.  

Cookbook Club

We’re in for a special treat at popular cookbook author and vegan expert Nava Atlas returns Saturday Oct. 26 at noon to talk about her brand-new book, 5-Ingredient Vegan: 175 Simple, Plant-Based Recipes for Delicious, Healthy Meals in Minutes!

In just a couple months, the process of tallying our nationwide population — the 2020 Census — will officially commence. Census results help determine representation in Congress; appropriating funding for schools, hospitals, roads; and much more. This tremendous undertaking requires considerable human resources nationwide.

Chocolate!

She will describe 17th-Century trade by the Hudson Valley’s Dutch settlers; chocolate manufacturing developments throughout the 18th and 19th centuries; and interesting tidbits about the current chocolate market.

The Kennedys will perform at the Guilderland Public Library on Sunday, Oct. 13, at 2 p.m. as part of the GPL Sunday Concert Series.

We’ll have a drop-in flu vaccine clinic at the Guilderland Public Library on Thursday, Oct. 10, from 4 to 7 p.m. Both the regular vaccine and the high-dose option for people ages 65 and older will be available. 

The pharmacist on hand can vaccinate any child age 3 and older. Please bring your insurance card. For those without insurance, each vaccine costs $39.99. 

Civics 101: The Mueller Report

A distinguished panel will convene at GPL on Thurday, Oct. 10 at 7  p.m. to cover the key findings of the 448-page Mueller Report.

Dr. Bruce Miroff, a national expert on the American Presidency and American politics; Dr. Bruce Dearstyne, a local author and historian; and Professor of Law Christine Sgarlata Chung, co-director of the Institute for Financial Market Regulation, will all take part in our in-depth discussion.

Meet Jacqueline Rogers

The Kennedys

We're thrilled to be hosting renowned folk-rock band The Kennedys as part of our GPL Sunday Concert Series on Oct. 13 at 2 p.m.

Pete and Maura Kennedy are perhaps best known for having been with Nanci Griffith's band, but their musical career spans over 20 years. They’ve released more than a dozen albums, including their most recent compilation, 2018’s “Safe Until Tomorrow.”

FLOSS Computer Guts 101

If you’re in grades 7 to 12 and curious about the inner workings of a computer, this after-school program is for you. 

We’ve taken the guts out of desktop computers; your task is to reassemble them, get them working, and download FLOSS (Free/Libre Open Source Software).

The Village Movement is an innovative endeavor founded 20 years ago in Beacon Hill, Massachussets of neighbors helping neighbors, with the goal of keeping seniors living independently in their homes. Villages are membership-driven, grassroots, not-for-profit organizations that coordinate access to a variety of services, including transportation, home repairs, and social events.

“The Night Diary”

We’re teaming up with Voorheesville Public Library on Sunday,  Oct. 6 at 1:30 p.m. to discuss the Newbery Honor-winning book for middle-grade readers, “The Night Diary.”

Author Veera Hiranandani will visit us via Skype to tell us more about her book, while we sample delicious Indian/Pakistani snacks. This program is for students in grades 5 to 8 with a caregiver, and takes place at Voorheesville Public Library. Please register and pick up a copy of the book at either library.

Baby Yoga

On Monday,  Oct. 7 at 10:30 a.m., join Rebecca Morris-Kencsan, L.M.T, M.A for baby yoga exercises to support your infant’s growth and development.

Civics 101: The Mueller Report

A distinguished panel will convene on Oct. 10 at 7 p.m. to elaborate on the key findings of the 448-page Mueller Report.

Dr. Bruce Miroff, a national expert on the American Presidency and American politics; Dr. Bruce Dearstyne, a local author and historian; and Professor of Law Christine Sgarlata Chung, co-director of the Institute for Financial Market Regulation, will all contribute to our in-depth examination of the Mueller Report.

Multiracial Hair Care

Let’s face it: caring for your child’s hair can be difficult. Parents in multiracial families face the added challenge of working with a hair type they’re not familiar with.

On Tuesday, Sept. 24 at 6:30 p.m., Lavida Barkley, of Coiled: A Textured Salon, will share her expertise to help simplify curly hair-care routines and product choices. The goal is to de-stress “Wash Day” and encourage you and your child to enjoy maintaining their hair.

Ukulele Jam

Whether you play ukulele, or want to learn, all skill levels are welcome to join the fun on Thursday, Sept. 26 at 6:30 p.m. for our informal jam.  We meet the fourth Thursday of each month for this family-friendly program. GPL Adventures: Paper Planes & Boomerangs 

Kids in third through fifth grades are invited to a high-flying adventure on Thursday. Sept. 12 at 3:30 p.m. for GPL Adventures: Paper Planes & Boomerangs.

They’ll experiment with different materials and designs to create the furthest flying plane and the best boomerang. Weather permitting, we’ll test our creations outside. Please register online, by phone, or in person.

Bilingual Story Time

Come celebrate the Autumn Moon Festival with a story time in both Mandarin and English!  Miss Julia will share “Ni Hao Mr. Moon!” with us on Saturday Sept. 14 at 10:30 a.m., geared toward children aged 6 and under. No registration is needed for this family-friendly event.  

GPL Sprouts: Taste Buds

Mad Science is back! on Monday, Sept. 16 at 3:30 p.m.  Children in pre-kindergarten through second grade will learn about the biology behind their taste buds and take home their very own taste test kit. 

Hands-on experimentation with magnifiers, model tongues, and mirrors will test the classic “tongue map” model. We’ll determine “supertasters” in our midst, and a nose-plugging experiment will demonstrate the link between taste and smell. Please register online, by phone, or in person.

We’re excited to usher in another season of story times for your little ones! All story times commence at 10:30 a.m.

Baby Bookworms (birth-18 months with a caregiver) starts Tueday. Sept. 17 (no storytime Oct. 1).  Toddler Time (ages 19-36 months with a caregiver) on Tuesdays and Wednesdays begins Sept. 17 (no storytime Oct. 1 and 9).

Preschool Drop-in Storytime (ages 3-5 years with a caregiver; younger siblings welcome) occurs Wednesdays & Thursdays starting Sept. 18 (no storytime Oct. 9 and 23).  Waddler Time (new walkers up to 24 months with a caregiver) is on Thursdays starting Sept. 19.  

Tiny Towns

Peter McPherson, inventor of the acclaimed board game Tiny Towns, was here recently to describe the soup-to-nuts process of creating a winning board game.He returns to GPL Tuesday, Sept. 17 at 6:30 p.m. to teach us how to play this fun and easy-to-learn game, sharing key strategies for becoming a Tiny Towns champion!
