Guilderland Library Notes for Wednesday, October 22, 2014

Tonight, Oct. 23, come to the Guilderland Public Library at 7 p.m., and meet Steve Stewart, who wears what looks like a space suit when he’s at work. You might think he’s an astronaut, but he works at the College of Nanoscience and Technology. Come see Steve put on his special gear and learn about nanoscience from a family-friendly perspective.

How Are You Going to Pay for Your Child’s College?

As any parent or caregiver of a college-bound teen knows, the financial aid process can be intimidating. Get an edge on the system by attending Paying for College at GPL on Saturday, Oct. 25, at 2 p,m, Joe Gorman, from NYS Higher Education Services Corporation (HESC), will provide information about how to apply for financial aid and scholarships.

It’s never too soon to start planning. Call 456-2400, ext. 2 to let us know you’ll be attending this vitally important class.

Pinstripe Empire

As we wrap up the World Series — the Kansas City Royals? Really? — help us close out the Monday Night Baseball Series on Monday, Oct. 27, at 6:30 p.m. by welcoming baseball author Marty Appel.

Appel will be at GPL to talk about his most recent book, Pinstripe Empire: The New York Yankees from Before the Babe to After the Boss.  He will also discuss his work as the former public relations director for the New York Yankees, and his many books about our national pastime.

Please register for this program by calling 456-2400, ext. 2.

TNT

When we say TNT at GPL we mean Tuesday Night Trivia at the library, and you’re invited! Join trivia master Joe Michon-Huneau and test your smarts on Tuesday, Oct. 28, at 7 p.m., in the Helderberg Room.

Prizes will be awarded to the winning teams. Teams should be made up of four or fewer people. No registration is required, just come with your team. You’ll have a dynamite time.

Bus trip

If you missed out on the Nov. 15 trip to New York City – which sold out in record time – you can still reserve your seats for the Dec. 6 trip. But do it soon. This trip has two buses, and the first one is sold out.

To reserve your seat online, go to the Chamber’s website at www.guilderlandchamber.com, or call the Chamber at 456-6611. You can also use the reservation form printed on the back panel of the library’s September-November newsletter; Reservation forms are available at the library as well.

The December 6 trip enables you to enjoy all the holiday excitement that only New York City can create. The buses will leave the GPL parking lot at 8 a.m., and will drop you off in midtown, on 42nd St, between 7th and 8th avenues. Planned arrival time is 10:30 a.m.  You have all day to enjoy the sights, sounds, and celebrations.

For the return trip, the buses will meet you just before 7 p.m. in front of the McDonald’s (again, on 42nd St., between 7th and 8th avenues). The buses will leave at 7 p.m., and get back to the GPL parking lot about 9:30 p.m.

Questions?  Call Linda Fahd at the Chamber at 456-6611  or Mark at the library at 456-2400, ext. 112 and they will be able to help.

“Lions, and tigers, and books! Oh, my!”

“Lions, and tigers, and books! Oh, my!” is the Halloween Theme at GPL on Friday, Oct. 31, when we hold a film festival of L. Frank Baum’s most-loved work, The Wizard of Oz.

The movie will be easy to find. Just come into the library and follow the Yellow-Brick Road through the doors of The Emerald City. You’ll find yourself in the Helderberg Room with comfy mats down front for relaxed viewing. And there will be popcorn, of course.  Showings of the movie will be at 11:30 a.m. and 3 p.m.; the movie is 1 hour 32 minutes long, so stay for as long or as short a time as you want.

Be sure to say “hello” (or “We’re not in Kansas anymore”) to all the staff members who are dressed up as Wizard of Oz characters. You’ll meet the Good Witch of The North, the friendliest Wicked Witch of the West as ever you’ve seen, at least one Dorothy (maybe two or three), and the apple-throwing tree (who, we promise, will not throw any apples).

We invite you to come in costume, too. It’s going to be a lot of fun for everybody. Oh, and pay no attention to that man behind the curtain…
