Guilderland Library Notes for Wednesday, September 10, 2014

September is Library Card Sign-Up Month, which means it’s a great time for those of you who are not taking advantage of this educational and cultural gem in your midst to come in and get your own Guilderland Public Library card.  It’s free, it’s waiting for you, and it’s yours!

If you already have a card, and haven’t stopped by lately, we want you back. Our variety of books, DVDs, CDs, programs for kids, and adults has never been more expansive.  All free and waiting for you.  So come in and check us out.

Or maybe you haven’t been to GPL because of outstanding fines. We have good news for you:  Every Friday in September is a Fine-Free Friday! Come in, see one of the friendly people at the circulation desk, and we'll "can your fines" for overdue items just like that.  When you come in, why not bring a can of food that we'll bring to the Interfaith Food Pantry, (Please check the expiration date.)  Everybody wins.

Photographic exhibit

You're invited to come to the library to view the work of area photographers who have been hard at work refining their techniques in creating photographic art works. The exhibit will run through September, and be on display in the Helderberg Room and the lobby display cases.

A reception in honor of the exhibiting photographers will be held Thursday, Sept. 18, at 7 p.m.  You’re invited to come to this reception and chat with  these very talented photographers.

Celebrating the

Star-Spangled Banner

On Sunday, Sept. 14, at 2 p.m., GPL is holding a Star Spangled Banner Bicentennial Celebration that begins with a talk by local author James Breig, who will trace the origins of The Star-Spangled Banner. His latest e-book, Star-Spangled Baseball, explores the links between the song and the sport, so he will also share some surprising stories that link our National Anthem and our national pastime.

At 2:45 p.m., following Breig's talk, we will have a concert of patriotic music featuring saxophonist David Demsey and pianist James Weidman. It is sure to be a wonderful afternoon, so join us and maybe even sing along.

Board meets tonight

The board of trustees will hold its bimonthly business meeting tonight, Thursday, Sept. 11, at 7:30 p.m., in the library’s Tawasentha Room.
