Guilderland Library Notes for Wednesday, August 20, 2014

Here’s what we’re reading at the Guilderland Public Library. Join us.

One thing you can be sure of – there’s always a lot going on for book lovers at GPL. We have several book discussion groups you’ll be interested in. And they would welcome you.  Try one out; you don’t know what you’re missing.

Snoops in the Stacks

We’re a lively bunch that enjoys reading and talking about mysteries. Many are long-standing mystery lovers and others are new to the genre. What is really interesting is reading authors one might never think to try and being pleasantly surprised, or even better – hooked. This program is Tuesdays at 7 p.m. We will be reading:

— Sept. 2, Just One Evil Act, by Elizabeth George;

— Oct. 7, One Good Turn, by Kate Atkinson; and

— Nov. 4, The Luminaries, by Elizabeth Catton.

Night Owls

We read a selection of fiction and nonfiction books on topics of current social and literary interest. Lively discussions always ensue in this group, who meet on Mondays at 7:30 p.m. We will be reading:

— Sept. 8, Flight Behavior, by Barbara Kingsolver;

— Oct. 13, President’s Club: Inside the World’s Most Exclusive Fraternity, by Nancy Gibbs and Michael Duffy; and

— Nov. 10, Burgess Boys, by Elizabeth Strout.

GPL Page Turners

The GPL Page Turners (formerly Knit One, Read Too!) read recently published books from a variety of genres, including contemporary fiction, historical fiction, and mystery, as well as the occasional nonfiction book.  New members are always welcome!  This group meets Wednesdays at 2 p.m. We will be reading:

— Sept. 10, The Dressmakers of Khair Khana, by Gayle Tzemach Lemmon;

— Oct. 8, The Orchardist, by Amanda Coplin; and

— Nov. 12, Orphan Train, by Christina Baker Kline.

Great Books

Are the classics still worth reading?  We think they are. These are the books that continue to be read in times, places, and cultures far removed from those in which they were written. Since these books have had so much to say to so many different people, they’re very likely to hold meaning for us as well.  Join us as we discuss books that you’ve always wanted to read, or may have read growing up but want to read again. This group meets Thursdays at 7 p.m. We will be reading:

— Sept. 4, Inferno, by Dante Alighieri;

— Oct. 2, Darkness at Noon, by Arthur Koestler; and

— Nov. 6, Candide, by Voltaire.

You are welcome to join any book discussion group listed.  To register, please call 456-2400, ext. 2, and let us know you’re coming.
