Our daughter, Cindy had a birthday a few weeks ago. That we have already talked about, but we did not do justice to one part of the party that was really very special,  the birthday cake.

When Margaret Ann Risk woke up one day, she thought about Dr. Martin Luther King’s famous speech,” I Have a Dream.” Little did her friends know that Risk had a dream also. Just like Dr. King, she started working with her friends to bring her dream to fruition.

One of the benefits of getting together with friends is the sharing of information that takes place. Of course, each group is different. When we meet with other parents who have children in the same school the sharing might be about the courses they are taking.

When the Altamont Fair was in town, I mentioned our friend Fran Ripley. A few days after the Enterprise was delivered, Harvey Levin saw me and said, “I wish I had known Fran was here. When we had the Masonic fast food booth, Fran was my working partner.

On Aug. 28, 1963 Dr. Martin Luther King Jr., delivered his “I Have a Dream” speech at the Lincoln Memorial in Washington, D.C. This year marked the 50th anniversary of that famous speech that has moved many people around the world. We heard, this week, that Dr.

 Fair week is always an exciting week around our house. I have spent all of fair week on the grounds in one capacity or another for most of our life here in Altamont.

Years ago, St. Lucy’s Church ran a food concession, and our entire family worked in the restaurant for many, many years.

When our children were small, we would have them call from the top of the stairs to let us know that they were awake and ready to come downstairs to see if Santa Claus had arrived. You could hear the squeals of delight as they jumped up and down waiting for us to come up to rescue them from the long wait. 

Every once in a while you may see a re-run clip of a young voluptuous blond, dressed in a bikini running on a beach. As she splashes through the edge of the surf, music from Ravels ‘Bolero” builds to an exciting crescendo filling the screen with excitement.

As I was listening to the sirens last Sunday my mind started to wander. Was that the Altamont Rescue Squad or a police siren? Years ago when I was much younger our friend, Judy  Hukey, was a member of the Rescue Squad. During the day, if she got a call, I would get a call!

Pat and I were walking along one of the trails when I was startled by a bright flash and said, “Was that lightning?” Before Pat could answer there was aloud clap of thunder and a loud rumble. We both laughed and said in unison, “Yes! That was definitely lightning!”
