Three Westerlo candidates introduce themselves

To the Editor:

We would like to serve you, our family, our friends, our community.

My name is George Langdon III and I am seeking the office of town of Westerlo supervisor. My wife, Loretta, and I reside in South Westerlo, Loretta having lived in this town all her life and I for 40 years. We have a family of seven children, 21 grandchildren, and three great-grandchildren.

I am a graduate of Oceanside High School on Long Island.  I joined the United States Navy in 1959 and served on the USS Lake Champlain, an aircraft carrier, as a machinist mate and was honorably discharged in 1965. I am a member of American Legion Post 291 in Greenville.

In my 40-year career in the transportation industry, I’ve been certified as a CDL [Commercial Driver’s License] instructor by the New York State Motor Truck Association, I developed a training program, trained 1,700 car haulers, assisted in accident investigations and as quality service representative, resolved conflicts between dealerships and drivers.

In February 1988, I was ordained into the ministry and have a Doctorate in Ministry.  Because of my experience in ministry, I have been used as a guidance counselor in schools both here and in Jamaica. I have extensive experience with marriage, teenage pregnancy, and drug and alcohol counseling.

I also served as the administrator of Servants Heart Boys Home, associate pastor in three churches and served on three school boards.  Presently, I am assisting Pastor Jason Thompson at Horizon Christian Fellowship and also am a substitute school bus driver for the Greenville Central Schools.

Along with members of the town board, I believe by using my extensive skills and training, we can make necessary improvements to our town. Having served on three school boards, I know we will not always agree but we can disagree agreeably.

The main focus must always be “what is right” not “who is right” for the betterment of all the people in the community, young and old alike.  When we confuse the “who and what,” we can make poor decisions.

Like most of the people in America, I am very disturbed about the direction the country has gone in recent years. We may not be able to change the whole country, but we can improve our local township and, with your help, we will. I am an American patriot who believes that God has blessed this great country and it can happen again.

I am Kevin Flensted. I have served the community as a volunteer firefighter for over 21 years and am currently the chief of the Westerlo Fire Company.

Professionally, I hold a bachelor of science degree in chemical engineering and a master’s degree in management, both from Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute in Troy. I also have managerial and technical expertise and hope to continue to serve this town in the capacity of town councilman.

I am Amie Burnside. I am married and we have a 14-year-old son.

Professionally, I hold licenses in property casualty insurance as well as being a notary public in the county of Albany. I am employed full-time with Fidelis Care in Latham.

I have lived in the Hilltowns for my entire life, growing up in East Berne as a Berne-Knox-Westerlo student. Personally, I love spending time with our family and friends whether it be at a ball game or a show.

I, too, am looking forward to serving our community and the town of Westerlo as a councilperson.
