McEneny to speak on the Empire State Plaza

BERNE — Jack McEneny's passion for history and his gift for storytelling are well known. He's had the role of county historian and written a history book on Albany, which was republished in 2006.  Jack knows a thing or two when it comes to the stories of our past.

This Monday, the Berne Historical Society hosts Mr. McEneny. The theme of his talk is the Office of General Services’ 50th-Year Celebration of the Empire State Plaza's dedication.

Delving deeper, you'll hear the tale hidden beneath the self-contained structure of marble. Think eminent domain, thousands of displaced homeowners, and lost businesses. Then picture $2 billion, a strong hint of controversy, and lost tax revenue. It's a story recounted in a recently released documentary aired on PBS: “The Neighborhood That Disappeared.”

Join us Monday, June 22, at 7 p.m. in the Berne Library's Community Room. You just may be surprised at what you'll learn. Our programs are free and open to the public. And, yes, there will be refreshments.
