To preserve church windows, Westerlo Reformed holds barbecue

WESTERLO — The stained-glass windows at the Westerlo Reformed Church, are difficult to appreciate in all their glory because the Plexiglas that protects them has clouded over the years.

“The original old stained glass is so pure in color, but you can’t see it. With the old covers, it’s like an extremely cloudy day all the time,” said Chris Allen, a church elder.

To replace the covers, which are over three decades old, she said, the church, located on Route 143 in Westerlo, is holding a chicken barbecue on May 30, from 4:30 to 7 p.m.

Ron Bryan will be overseeing the barbecue, with homemade marinade on the chicken, said Allen. “He’s taken culinary classes,” said Allen. “We do all our own chicken. We’ll have 10 pits completely covered.”

The meal will also include homemade cream puffs for dessert. “You won’t want to miss those,” said Allen.

The cost for the meal is $11 for adults and $5 for children under 12. Take-outs are available for an additional dollar.
