Help celebrate Hladun and keep New Scotland tidy

Jim Hladun in 2011 stains timbers in the gazebo he helped build in Voorheesville’s Hotaling Park. Janna Shillinglaw says, “He is doing what he’s always done — helping make the town of New Scotland a better place to live.” Hladun will be honored as the 2016 Volunteer of the Year at the May 7 New Scotland Kiwanis Town-Wide Volunteer Day.

To the Editor:

New Scotland Kiwanis Town-Wide Volunteer Day, co-sponsored by the town of New Scotland and the New Scotland Kiwanis Club, will take place this coming Saturday, May 7.  As part of the event, the planning committee selects a member of the community who represents the spirit of volunteerism and has demonstrated an outstanding commitment to the town of New Scotland. We are pleased to announce that this year’s “Volunteer of the Year” recipient is James Hladun.

It would take several pages of The Altamont Enterprise to highlight Mr. Hladun’s dedication to the town. From years of teaching and coaching in Voorheesville to decades of cheerful service in Kiwanis, Jim has served in our community’s schools, churches, parks, and businesses for 50 years.

Please help us congratulate James Hladun. He will receive his award at the event’s picnic and his name will be added to the Volunteer Plaque that hangs in Town Hall.

New Scotland Kiwanis Town-Wide Volunteer Day offers a wide variety of projects for all abilities and ages — yard work and small projects at area senior homes, cemetery grounds work, and a clean-up of portions of the Vly Creek.  Bring a friend, coworkers, or your family, or come on your own.

For those of you sending your high school children to help us out for the day — why don’t you come join the fun and work side by side with your child or help with a separate project? Many hands make light work.

To participate, just show up this Saturday, May 7, at the New Scotland Town Hall (back door) either at 8:30 a.m. for the morning shift and light breakfast or come to the noon barbecue and then head out to a remaining project for the 1-to-4 p.m. shift.

We have plenty of burgers and hot dogs for the barbecue, but welcome your side dishes and desserts if you’d like to bring anything to share. If you are volunteering, please remember to dress for outdoor work — no open-toed shoes, for example!

Our annual volunteer day truly is a wonderful neighbors-helping-neighbors event. Whether you can help the whole day or just two hours, we hope you will join us this Saturday. Please call or text me with any questions: (518) 369-0093 or email janna0093@hotmail.com.
