For the first time in many years, we can have all BKW grads on board

To the Editor:

Matt was recently elected to the Berne-Knox-Westerlo school board to fill a vacant seat and complete the term.

Now once again a candidate, Matt needs the support of the community. Matt is a lifelong Hilltown resident, a BKW graduate, and father of two daughters, also BKW graduates. And he’s an experienced businessman.

In recent years, our school has had many administrative turnovers. This has affected academics, staff, and student morale, and produced an academic uncertainty for our students.

As a BKW resident, graduate, and parent, Matt has a vested interest in our school and community.

Matt has advocated the reinstatement of academic courses and introduction of agricultural and community-based learning — something for all students!

At a recent board meeting Matt responded to a concerned resident about the 0.5 percent tax increase. Matt’s response was respectful, professional, and informative.

Communication between board members and community is crucial. He addressed the importance of facing our financial (shortfall) responsibilities now, rather than risking a larger increase in the future.

His commitment to student education is what we need.

I encourage our community to vote for Matt, and give him the opportunity to help give our students a road to academic success.

Also running for the board is another lifelong resident; BKW graduate, parent, and grandparent, with a business background and community commitment is Susan Kendall Schanz.

For the first time in many, many years, we have the opportunity for an all - BKW alumni school board.

Please vote on May 17 for an outstanding future.
