Hilltown seniors can enjoy the flute as they dine

Silvery notes: Flutist Nancy Freuh, who  re-enacts history, will play during the Helderberg Senior Services lunch program on both April 21 and May 1. On April 14, she played Civil War music to commemorate the 150th anniversary of President Abraham Lincoln’s assassination.

To the Editor:

I became aware of the need for support of the Helderberg Senior Services lunch program held three days each week at the Hilltown Senior Center (the former Foxenkill Grange Hall) by reading articles in your paper.  They need an average attendance of 30 seniors per day to keep the program going, and they are struggling to meet this number.

Being too young to help their attendance numbers, I thought I might do my part by providing some “dinner music,” hoping to encourage seniors to attend to hear and enjoy the music.

On Tuesday, April 21, I will be joined by Heather Curvin of Knox, and we will present duets featuring old favorites from a songbook published in 1935, and used widely in school music programs at that time.  Maybe we have picked one of your favorites!

On Friday, May 1, I will be presenting a flute solo program featuring songs with a color in the title.  This program was originally compiled by my late husband, Bill Frueh, and I have adapted it to a solo performance.

So, to quote from the town of Berne website (http://berneny.org/heldererg-senior-services-luncheons/): “Calling all Seniors!  Lunch is available every Monday, Tuesday, and Friday at the Hilltown Senior Center, 1330 Helderberg Trail, Berne, New York.  Doors open at 11 a.m. with lunch served beginning at noon.

“Gather with your friends and neighbors for a lively lunch and conversation.  All are welcome!

“Please make reservations in advance if possible.  Call 872-9400; email plightbody@nycap.rr.com, or sign up at a luncheon for an upcoming date.

“Contributions of your choice are appreciated, but not necessary.”

I hope to see lots of seniors there to enjoy a nutritious lunch and to enjoy the music, which starts at noon!
