Volunteer Day fosters community spirit — helpers are needed

To the Editor:

New Scotland Kiwanis Town Wide Volunteer Day, co-sponsored by the town of New Scotland and the New Scotland Kiwanis Club, will be held on Saturday, May 2, with two shifts from 9 a.m. to noon and from 1 to 4 p.m., with a barbecue at the town hall from noon to 1 p.m. for all volunteers.

The day is meant to foster our community spirit by helping those in the town, especially seniors and persons with disabilities, with light chores, yard work, and other small projects. It truly is a wonderful “neighbors helping neighbors” event.

Town Wide Volunteer Day also helps clean up, beautify, and preserve the history of our community by cleaning up areas of the Vly Creek, improving conditions at local cemeteries, and planting flowers at community locations that serve and honor seniors and past volunteers.

We are asking community members to help us identify New Scotland residents in their neighborhoods or parishes that could use some volunteer help that day.  There is no cost.

Please contact Lance Moore at 765-4969 by April 17 with contact information of residents in need. You may also email Lance at moorejl1216@aol.com or message New Scotland Kiwanis through Facebook. Seniors in need may also reach out to Susan Kidder at Town Hall to sign up as well.

Volunteers are needed! We will have a wide variety of projects and many hands make light work. Bring a friend, co-workers, or your family or come on your own.

To register to volunteer, please send an email to porters@localnet.com or contact Rich or Joanne Porter at 765-4582. We also have an event page on Facebook. Just search “New Scotland Town Wide Volunteer Day” and you will find it. Once registered to volunteer, you will receive further instruction on the details of the day and projects.

Lastly, I would like to acknowledge the efforts of the National Honor Society at Voorheesville’s Clayton A. Bouton High School in forging a renewed interest in organizing what was an annual event for many years.

Thank you, as well, to the 2012 committee members who eagerly signed back on to help plan the day. In 2012, we had over 80 volunteers and 26 projects around the Town of New Scotland, including the Village of Voorheesville. We hope to make it another special event for those we help and those who help!
