GCSD celebrates Music In Our Schools Month

GUILDERLAND —The Guilderland Central School District has a month full of events for March, which is Music In Our Schools Month:

— Several middle school ensembles will perform at the Empire State Plaza on Tuesday, March 17. The Farnsworth Middle School Select Band, under the direction of Alexis Ziomek, and the FMS Jazz Ensemble, under the direction of Jason Utter, will perform in the South Concourse at 12:25 p.m. The concert is free and open to the public;

— March 19 is the annual Cabaret at Farnsworth, featuring the jazz and stage bands from the middle and high schools. Students demonstrate their creativity through improvisation, the instantaneous creation of music in the moment.

— Spring concerts begin at the end of March with band, chorus, and orchestra performances at Lynnwood Elementary on March 30 and Westmere Elementary on March 31.

— March also features the student theatrical productions with the High School Guilderland Players presenting “Curtains” from March 12 to 15. Farnsworth Middle School MASK presented “Mulan Jr.” earlier in the month.

— Other events in March include the Student Composer Night on March 23 where composers of any age are invited to present and perform their original compositions at Farnsworth Middle School beginning at 7 p.m.

Music In Our Schools Month is a nationwide event saluting excellence in music education. The National Association for Music Education sponsors this annual event, which focuses national attention on the importance of music in our schools.
